FEDERAL PRIORITIES ALIGNED WITH QUEBEC'S IN OTTAWA
November 25, 2021
The new Liberal government in Ottawa announced its top priorities yesterday. From creating 37,000 childcare spaces, to electrifying our transportation system, to protecting our culture and promoting French, Quebec's priorities are front and centre. "Our priorities are very clear. We had promised and now we are starting the machine. We are pursuing our plan to get Quebec out of the pandemic, to fight climate change and to build an economy that leaves no one behind. We're going to do it collaboratively, by reaching out, because that's what the people here expect. It's time to get to work," said Pablo Rodriguez, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Quebec's lieutenant. Protecting Quebec culture and the French language is a priority for our government, as is supporting our minority language communities. Our government is committed to quickly introducing a bill to better protect French in Quebec, and another to force the web giants to promote our culture and language online. "We need to do more to protect French in Quebec and the federal government has a concrete plan to do so. We need to put more teeth into the Official Languages Act and we will deliver. This is what Quebecers expect. The web giants must also contribute to the creation of content from here, it's a question of equity. This is exactly what we will do," added Mr. Rodriguez. "Our government also wants to fight the rising cost of living, and to do that, we must, for example, work with municipalities to increase the number of affordable housing units for our citizens.  Reviving the economy of the regions of Quebec, protecting the environment in partnership with the First Nations, creating an agency to protect water and, at the same time, our farmers, these are all objectives that appeal to me and I am ready to work with my colleagues to achieve them," says Pascale St-Onge, Minister of Sports, Minister responsible for the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec and MP for Brome-Missisquoi. The Speech from the Throne opens each new session of Parliament following the election of a new government in Ottawa. The Speech from the Throne allows the government to state its priorities and objectives and how it intends to achieve them.  The last federal election was held on September 20th and Justin Trudeau's Liberals have the largest number of elected members from Quebec in the House of Commons.
